Keyword: Pattern cutting, building network
"Perseverance and determination are the key."
Mr. Lewis said when talked about job hunting for graduates. To be frank, Mr. Lewis's career trajectory is nothing short of my aspiration. As a fashion design student deeply passionate about pattern cutting, nearly all my creations strive to showcase my proficiency in this art. I revel in the joy of sketching patterns and witnessing them transform from 2D to 3D, an unparalleled experience. His perspective on pattern cutting resonates with me deeply: "not about destructing garment but building and creating it." Yet, Mr. Lewis's journey through the industry, having undertaken almost every role imaginable, leaves me in awe of his talent, diligence, and unimaginable creativity.
我认为他对于pattern cutting的态度我是非常赞同的: “not about destructing garment but building and create it.”
The pattern cutting industry sets high standards for applicants, often favoring experienced candidates. But as a graduate, there's no need to despair just yet.
1. Start by exploring foundational roles. Like Mr. Lewis's initial foray into the industry as a sample cutter, even if the work itself may seem mundane, it significantly enhances attention to detail, patience, and focus. Moreover, it serves as a fundamental and effective stepping stone towards becoming a pattern cutter in the future. What can I learn from this? Never aim too high too soon; laying a solid foundation and honing one's skills are always paramount. As the younger generation, courage is abundant within us, but becoming a pattern cutter demands time and practice.
2. Seize every opportunity. Even when the odds seem slim, never miss a chance to showcase yourself. Through his experiences, Mr. Lewis teaches us that even if the chance appears 99% impossible in your mind, give it your all for that 1% possibility. And he succeeded. Moreover, don't hesitate to ask questions; if doubts arise, resolve them promptly.
3. Learn to establish networks and connections with companies and recruiters. During his entrepreneurial journey, Mr. Lewis realized the importance of maintaining healthy and friendly relations with recruiters. Since it's their job to find suitable candidates for positions, staying in touch can make them remember and think of you. While not a prerequisite for securing a job, it certainly helps.
(4) In actual design work, learn to extract new elements from old things and develop them. While not strictly job-seeking advice, as a designer, not every design will spring forth from your sketches; sometimes, you need to extract and apply elements from existing designs that align with yours. This is an effective method that can prove invaluable in practical work scenarios.
